Speed Mentoring at the Women’s Enterprise Centre (WEC) in Kelowna
I volunteered to be a business mentor at the Speed Mentoring event – part of a Canada-wide challenge to mentor 10,000 people during Global Entrepreneurship Week.
As a former participant in the Women’s Enterprise Centre’s peer mentoring program, it seemed like a fun event and a good opportunity to give back, and assist other women looking to grow their business.
There was plenty of staff on hand – who had done an amazing job of organizing and promoting the event – and 7 business coaches to offer advice during the short intervals of the speed mentoring round. When not meeting 1-on-1 with a coach, the 40 or so attendees were able to mingle over appies and network with other business owners and the WEC staff.
My area of expertise is social media marketing. I had four mentees who each had 12 minutes to discuss any marketing challenges they were having in their business, which included reflexology, an optician, a handcrafted clothing boutique, and senior’s care. I was able to provide general social media advice plus give each business owner ideas specific to their industry. Each participant left with a short worksheet that would help get them started in thinking strategically about implementing a social media plan.

By the end of the evening, we had added to the tally of people mentored in StartUp Canada’s mentoring challenge. The night was a success, and due to the positive feedback from both mentors and mentees, the Women’s Enterprise Centre might offer more speed mentoring nights.
